The biggest Quran in the world is available at an Islamic boarding school Al-Shriyyah Nurul Iman in Bogor, West Java.

Leader of the boarding school, cleric Saggaf ibn Mahdi ibn Assyekh Abu Bakar ibn Salim, said the Quran was originated from Moro, Philippines.

“At a sudden, we were sent a package two months ago. I may be given a mandate to take good care of [the Quran],” said the cleric today, August 20.

The Quran is two meters in length and 2.80 meters in width. In addition, it is made of banana midrib instead of paper.

The verses are hand-written. Nonetheless, details as to how long the Quran is written as well as who may be behind its production remain unknown. “We’ve been waiting for the precise data for two months,” said the cleric.

The Quran is kept inside Masjid Thoha. Moreover, before it is stored in the masjid, the cleric inspects every verse available. “I did a double-check on the Quran for a month inside my room,” he said. No mistake was found upon the verifying process.

“Hopefully, the Quran can least for the next 500 years,” he said.

The population in Papua who are positively living with HIV/AIDS until August 2010 are estimated to reach more than 5,000 people, a significant increase compared to last year.

Scientists using cutting-edge technology to explore waters off Indonesia were wowed by colorful and diverse images of marine life on the ocean floor – including plate-sized sea spiders and flower-like sponges that appear to be carnivorous.

They predicted Thursday that as many as 40 new plant and animal species may have been discovered during the three-week expedition that ended Aug. 14.

More than 100 hours of video and 100,000 photographs, captured using a robotic vehicle with high-definition cameras, were piped to shore in real-time by satellite and high-speed Internet.

Verena Tunnicliffe, a professor at the University of Victoria in Canada, said the images provided an extraordinary glimpse into one of the globe’s most complex and little-known marine ecosystems.

“Stalked sea lilies once covered the ocean, shallow and deep, but now are rare,” she said in a written statement. “I’ve only seen a few in my career. But on this expedition, I was amazed to see them in great diversity.”

Likewise, Tunnicliffe has also seen sea spiders before, but those were tiny in comparison, all around one-inch (2.5 centimeters) long: “The sea spiders … on this mission were huge. Eight-inches (20-centimeters) or more across.”

One animal captured on video looks like a flower, covered with glasslike needles, but scientists think it is probably a carnivorous sponge. The spikes, covered with sticky tissue, appear to capture food as it passes by.

Scientists used powerful sonar mapping system and the robotic vehicle to explore nearly 21,000 square miles (54,000 sq. kilometers) of sea floor off northern Indonesia, at depths ranging from 800 feet (240 meters) to over two miles (1.6 kilometers).

The mission was carried out by the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s ship, the Okeanos Explorer. An Indonesian vessel, the Baruna Jaya IV, also took part, collecting specimens that, together with all rights for future use, will remain in the country.

Confirmation that a species is new involves a scientific peer review and other steps and can take years.

Indonesia’s president ordered police to arrest the assailants who stabbed a Christian worshipper in the stomach and beat a minister in the head with a wooden plank as they headed to prayers.

Neither of the injuries appeared to be life-threatening.

Asmirani never imagined that the house she had lived in since 1981 would finally become part of Malaysian territory despite of his being Indonesian. The shift in state border took place since the new agreement on territories was renewed in Aji Kuning, Sebatik Island, East Kalimantan.

Residing in Malaysian land, Asmirani said he is still an Indonesian. In addition to having an Indonesian ID card, Asmirani said he still deals with regular matters in terms of citizenship.

“I’m from Bugis. I’ve no problem dealing with administrative affairs,” he told VIVAnews in Sebatik Island, East Kalimantan, today, Dec 14.

Aji Kuning is a special territory which on one side glues Indonesia and Malaysia while bordering the two nations. Different homes stand on two countries, one of which is owned by Mapangara. The front part of his home lies in Indonesia while the rear section nests in Malaysia.

“I find it okay to live in two countries. I’m an Indonesian by nationality,” said Mapangara who, with his wife, has been in the area for 10 years.

Most of Aji Kuning population are mainly of Bugis ethnic, which help ease them to choose a nationality. They also paste the Indonesian logo of red and white on the front part of their homes.”Once an Indonesian, I’ll be forever Indonesian,” said another Indonesian, Darnah.

A joint search and rescue team found five climbers lost on Mount Tandikek, West Sumatra, alive today. According to an information, two of the five mountaineers were wounded, blocking them from proceeding with the journey.  Read the rest of this entry »
